Principal's Message September 17

Dear Rieke Families,

The Run for Rieke pledge forms were sent home last Friday. Students have this week and next to collect pledges before our Run on Friday the 28th. All students K-5 will run/walk as many laps as possible in 30 minutes on the Wilson HS track. This event raises money for Rieke staffing by having it go through the All Hands Raised Foundation. This is the only way to provide additional funding in support of teachers and staff.

It was great having so many of you at Back to School Night last week. Part of Rieke’s success is the strong school home partnership. If you have any questions please reach out to either your child’s teacher, myself or to our counselor Ian Johnstone.

Tomorrow we will be having our first Lockdown drill. We do talk with the students about how we have to practice what to do if there is a threat inside the school. It’s a pretty serious topic and teachers discuss it in a way to help students take it seriously without causing fear or anxiety. We also have fire drills each month and next month as part of Earthquake Awareness month we will be participating in the Great Oregon Shakeout drill.

We’re entering our 4th week of school and things seem to be going fairly smoothly. Routines are being established and everyone is getting into the swing of schedules and expectations. Teachers are really focusing on our new literacy program and it is exciting to see how well the students are responding.

Hopefully you will be able to join us at the PTA’s first meeting of the year next week on Tuesday the 25th. Their meeting was moved due to the conflict with Yom Kippur. We will also be looking for volunteers to help with the Run on the 28th. We need lots of cheerleaders in addition to a few folks for each class checking off each runner’s laps.

 Have a good week,
