The Backpack Program Needs Your Help

This important program supports about 10 families each weekend by providing non-perishable food items in backpacks every Friday. Rieke is the only Portland Public School who offers a backpack program based on donations from our families for our families.

There are many ways to donate!

You can bring food in and put it in the cart outside the office. We emptied the pantry at the end of last year, so we need help filling it back up again!

We are always in need of the following items. Please remember, the food is going into backpacks, so Costco sized items are too big. Bolded items are what is currently needed the most.

  • Peanut butter

  • Mac & cheese

  • Canned tuna

  • Canned chicken

  • Canned fruit or applesauce (cups, squeezy, or jars)

  • Canned vegetables

  • Canned beans

  • Canned soup

  • Chili & spaghettio's

  • Pasta sauce

  • Instant oatmeal packets (no large containers of oatmeal please)

  • Bisquick

  • Pancake mix

  • Hamburger helper

  • Syrup

  • Jelly

  • Small boxes of cereal

  • Snacks, like granola bars, Z-bars, fruit leathers, fruit chews, small bags of chips, cheese crackers, nuts

You can also make a check payable to Rieke PTA and designate “backpack program” on the note line. We also accept gift cards in an envelope marked “backpack program.” These monetary donations allow us to fill in where we have donation gaps and are very helpful. Please drop them off at the office.

We are very proud of this program, and it couldn't happen without your generous support. Thank you!
