Principal's Message, September 27

Sept 26, 2019

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped our art teacher Jill Mitchell, artist John Stommel, and ALL of our students create and paint the new Rieke ground mural. Thank you to the PTA for their support and funding, and to Sherwin Williams for the donated paint. The mural is nearly complete now. If you have not checked it out yet please do so soon!

Next week is our first Scholastic Book Fair. The book fair, organized by the PTA, is open every day for families to shop from 8:30-9:00 AM and then again after school from 3:00-5:00. On Tuesday it will stay open later until 6:30. Help support the Rieke PTA, library, and your child’s love of books.

The ever increasing amount of parent volunteers has been wonderful. It is a sign of our community commitment to our children. If you have yet to volunteer this year please check and make sure you have a current background check. Links for the process are at

Our Lost and Found is already starting to overflow. Remind your child to stop and look for their items. The items are all stored outside the gym in a closet across from the art room.

Walk to School Day is a great event that is set for October 2nd. Join your friends and neighbors that day as a sign of wellness and health.

Every school in PPS conducts a series of scheduled drills throughout each academic year. Tomorrow our staff and students will participate in the first of two mandatory Lock Down drills for the year. Teachers will use age-appropriate language to prepare and debrief students about the drill. Since we understand the emotional nature of these drills, I wanted to make sure that you also know is this happening. Participating in drills helps our team improve practices so that if there were ever a need for us to follow these procedures in a real situation, we are able to do so in the safest way possible. Our ultimate goal is that students are safe at school and know how to respond in an emergency. If you have questions or concerns about the drill, please feel free to reach out.

Remember October 11 is a state-wide in-service day and there will be no school that day. If you are looking for a fun activity that day, see the attached flyer from the Wilson Cheer team.
