Principal's Message, August 27th

Dear Rieke Rocket community,

We are so excited for 1st to 5th grade students to return to school on Wednesday. Our staff has been working very hard to prepare for your arrival. I hope many of you can stay after school starts and visit during PTA’s coffee social out in the foyer. I look forward to meeting more of you! The first bell rings at 8:35, if students and families arrive early they will need to wait outside. School supplies can be brought to the classroom after the bell where they will be added to classroom shared materials. Dismissal is at 3:00. Please have a clear plan with your students for pick-up.

Back to school packets will go home on the first day. They include our handbook, cafeteria calendar menu, PTA membership form, walking field trip form, new procedures for volunteering and student safety, and your child’s registration form. Please check over the registration page, make any necessary changes and return to school. Bus tags went home with teacher placement letters. We have a calendar fix to mention from handbook, the teaching planning day in November is on the 1st, not the 8th.

Thank you to everyone who came out on community care day. The school grounds are much improved and safety increased. Thank you!

Our staff is nearly complete now. We have enough kindergarten students to keep our 3 classes which preserves other staffing. The office staff is now complete and ever getting trained up, principal secretary Lynda Gordon has been amazing! Anne Eddy is our new school secretary and happily learning all her new responsibilities. Even I am ever learning new things and getting up to speed. Thank you for your patience! In addition, we have hired a sustainability coordinator as an EA. She will also support primary grade literacy before lunch. We will be looking for a few last lunch EA positions. If you are interested please contact Jon Jeans at

There are many volunteer opportunities and we welcome any assistance you can provide. Check with the office or your child’s teacher to see how you best can help. We are also looking for lightly used games for our resource rooms.

Rieke lost 2 teacher positions this year compared to last year. As a result our class sizes are rather large across the board. And we are popular, more kids keep coming. While this dynamic will impact teachers and students, we do have the staff (Team Rieke) to adapt and excel. Our aim is to be the best elementary school in PPS despite these growing pains. We are adding some support people to address student needs. I expect fully we will continue to grow and next year be prepared to grow as the new state budget revenues are put into Oregon education.

We continue developing our web site to be more robust and offer better insights into the why and what of our efforts. The green team is being built. New common language expectations for students are developed and we are working on new posters students can understand. I have a plan to meet and learn every students’ name by the end of this week. Parents will be next. Cheers!
